The Deaconess Aquatic Center (DAC) broke ground Wednesday and will move forward with a Summer 2021 opening. Garmong Construction Services is spearheading the project.

Once completed, DAC will replace Evansville’s 44-year-old indoor public swimming facility, Lloyd Pool. The 70,000-square-foot indoor aquatic center will be constructed next to historic Bosse Field in Garvin Park.

“What's happening at this site is a result of community partnership,” said Mayor Lloyd Winnecke. “Take a look around at what’s currently happening in our city. It's all being built on collaboration. This project is no different.”

Deputy Mayor and Aquatic Task Force Chairman Steve Schaefer, Dr. James Porter with Deaconess and U.S. Olympic swimmer and Gold Medalist Lilly King also spoke at the event.

"This pool is a vision for the future of Evansville," said Lilly King. “We want to build a legacy bigger than the one we started with.” You can watch the full ceremony below.

DAC design plans include both a leisure and “stretch-50” competition pool with a diving well. The competition pool is designed to accommodate both collegiate and high school swim meets. The leisure pool design has a zero-depth entry area with space for swim lessons and play features. DAC designs also include seating for 900 spectators, locker rooms, concession stands, meeting rooms and an outdoor splash park.
