INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Republicans are accusing Democrat John Gregg of ducking hard questions in his ongoing campaign against Republican Gov. Mike Pence, even though the November election is months away.

Gregg has lied low recently to focus on fundraising. But Republicans are making a concerted effort to draw him into debate over hot-button political issues — even when they have little to do with the job of governor.

Gregg has yet to weigh in on several substantive issues, including what to do about Indiana's poorly rated roads.

Gregg's campaign counters that Pence is the one who is ducking questions, including whether lawmakers should enshrine civil rights protections for gay lesbian and transgendered people into state law.

Pence for months has refused to say where he stands on the issue.
