Illegally parking in a space designated for disabled motorists will now cost you double in the state of Indiana.

Earlier last week, a new state law took effect that makes parking in a disabled spot without a permit an infraction that can result in a fine of $100 instead off the $50 citation that had been previously issued.

However, some people are skeptical that increasing fines will keep people from parking in disabled spots. Some say that most Hoosier drivers were probably not aware of the old fine, so the more expensive citation is not likely to receive much more consideration.

"I see a lot of people who will park and leave their car running, and run in and out of the store to grab something. And then they're long gone,” said Indiana resident Linda Juarez, who parks has a permit to use disabled parking due to cardiovascular issues. “How is this new law going to stop them?”

Interestingly, the original proposal was written to increase the fine from $50 to $200, but the fine was diminished due to fear that the bill would not make it out of the committee.

The new law is just one of 200 new laws that went into effect in Indiana on July 1, 2013.
