After a social media post went viral about the recent disinfectant change, Evansville Water and Sewer Utilities has responded.

You may have heard recently that Evansville water will soon temporarily change the disinfectant they normally use in our water and because of that we may notice a slight difference in taste or smell to our water.  They do this twice a year.

However a post went crazy on social media yesterday claiming the new disinfectant was causing dogs to get sick, however they haven't changed the disinfectant yet, it starts on 8/19. The EWSU assures us that the change is temporary and they do it twice a year already and have not had any issues.  The post  (which has since been removed) said:

Evansville water company has changed their disinfectant and it is causing dogs to get a bacterial infection, with blood diarrhea being the outcome.  Make sure you are giving your pups filtered water so they don't get sick! My vet has had over a dozen calls of sick dogs just in the last week.  They will need antibiotics and to be put on chicken and rice until they aer better, but the water is the cause of this.  I'm going to write a letter to the city and you should too.  The vet visit cost me $111, but the pain and upset tummy of my girl is what I'm more upset about.  She's getting better, but I want to let everyone know in case it happens to yours.  If you notice your pups poop has gone bad, don't wait! Get them in before it gets too bad! Hope this helps!

EWSU has issued a statement and a video explaining what the change to the disinfectant in the water is, completely safe!

The temporary switch from chloramine to free chlorine will begin on Monday, August 19. This brief, scheduled change in disinfectant is a standard water treatment to keep water mains clean and free of potentially harmful bacteria throughout the year. EWSU Director Allen Mounts responds to recent concerns on social media about the use of free chlorine in the water treatment process.

Check out their video below answering any questions you may have about the temporary change.
