Dave Westrich

I grew up in Cincinnati, beginning my radio career at my high school radio station, WNSD. I landed in Evansville in 1980.  Throughout the 80's and early 90's, I learned the ropes of radio in several different positions on WGBF AM and WKDQ.  My radio hiatus came in spring of '92 when I attended U.S.I. to become an educator.  I acquired my B.S. and began teaching shortly thereafter.  Although I had a great time with the kids in North Spencer, I made the decision to return to the airwaves in June of 2011.  Now I'm spending the afternoons with you! I have an absolutely wonderful wife, Jenny (we met at the very first Mike Harvey sock hop in 1990),  two awesome kids, and some little critters to keep us all company.

Spring Technically Springs Forth in Evansville and the Tri-State

Tomorrow's the day when, technically, Old Man Winter is "outta here!"  Is there anyone who's not happy about this fact?  (If so, maybe seeing a therapist is in order.)  According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, spring begins with the vernal equinox on March 20 at 11:57 a.m. CDT (Evansville time).  So along with the warmer temps, longer daylight hours, birds and greening plants, let's delve into the vernal equinox.

Should All-Terrain Vehicles Have More Access to Public Roadways? [Poll]

Recently there's been a push to open up more roads to All-Terrain Vehicles, usually called "four-wheelers."  Yet, studies have shown that ATV accidents on roadways are widespread and have been increasing over the years.  In most states, farmers and others who use ATVs for work already are permitted to use them on public roads. Trail riders are also permitted to cross public roads with them.  So why the push to grant ATVs more public road access?

Longest and Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parades are Part of U.S. History

Here's another piece of trivia about St. Patrick's Day that you may not know.  The United States, specifically Boston, began the tradition of holding a St. Patrick's Day parade before the U.S. Constitution was even thought about.  The first public celebration was held back in 1737!  So you would think, naturally, that the longest parade on record would be in Boston, but it's not.

French Toast Recipe Wakes You Up With Lots of Flavor

Sometimes the most flavorful meals that taste the best are the simplest.  Believe me, Jenny has some more complicated recipes that taste great, but it’s hard to improve on something that tastes great in it’s basic form.  I love having some coffee with Jenny’s French toast.  It’s a perfect combination of flavors!

Alcatraz Really Does Have Tunnels Under It, Just Like in the Move, “The Rock”

I was perusing the move shelves at the end of last week, hoping to find something that my family would enjoy watching together.  I was actually looking for a different movie when I spied, "The Rock," starring Sean Connery, Nicholas Cage and Ed Harris.  "Oh, yeah, I remember that one!" I said to myself.  I knew that Elliot and Emily would enjoy watching it, and they did.  Then I began to think about those tunnels in the movie that supposedly ran beneath Alcatraz.  Could there be any truth to those tunnels?  It appears that the answer is, "Yes."

Debunking Those Rules of Health Myths

For how many years have we been following ideas we thought were "healthy?"  It seems that every so often, some new piece of information comes out to tell us all what we should be doing to stay healthy.  Then later we find out that what we thought was truth is fabrication.  For example, how long have we heard that sugar makes children hyper?  The idea spread like wildfire, but it's not true.

Plants and Poisons are Pet Dangers Lurking in Your Yard

As the weather gets better and the temperature warms up, the urge within us to spend more time outside grows stronger.  We're not the only creatures that will spend more time outside.  Our dogs will, too.  So we all should keep our canine friends in mind as we begin to decorate the yard this springtime with a few more plants.  It's not just the plants that may cause pet problems, it's also the "stuff" that helps the plants grow that can be dangerous to your dog.
