Same Sex Marriage Debate Heads to Indiana Senate Committee
The Indiana Senate committee is expected to pass a constitutional amendment sometime today banning same-sex marriages.
This controversial debate, where Republican forces smother the Democrats by a margin of 37-13, now looks to determine whether the second sentence of the amendment will be thrown back in as part of the verbiage prohibiting civil unions.
Testimony on both sides of the proposed amendment, which passed two-weeks ago in the House 57-40, is scheduled to be heard later this afternoon by the committee.
If the Senate votes to restore the second sentence, the measure either will go back to the House or be sent to a conference committee in an attempt to reach a compromise. Restoring the second sentence to this amendment could put the measure in the hands of Indiana voters this November.
HJR-3 dictates that only marriage between one man and one woman be recognized as a marriage in Indiana.
