Newburgh Police Warn Residents of IRS Phone Scam

An old phone scam is rearing its ugly head once again, and this time its target is residents of Newburgh.

The Newburgh Police Department issued a statement through their Facebook page Wednesday afternoon saying they've received multiple reports from residents saying they've received phone calls from individuals claiming to be with IRS. The callers claim the potential victim is behind on their taxes and immediate payment is required to avoid prosecution. They then offer to take the payment over the phone by asking for a credit or debit card number.

Officials with the Newburgh Police reminds residents actual IRS agents will never ask for personal information such as credit or debit card and Social Security numbers over the phone, and if you believe there's a chance you could owe money, contact the IRS directly.
