Colorado Murder Suspect Arrested by Indiana State Police in Posey

A North Carolina man suspected of murdering a convenience store clerk in Colorado was arrested in Posey County by Indiana State Police.

On the Run

A man suspected of shooting and killing a convenience store clerk in Wheat Ridge, Colorado has been captured in Southern Indiana. The shooting took place on Thursday, January 5, 2023. They say the suspect, 26-year-old Shawnathan Deangelo Chance of Dunn North Carolina attacked the clerk before shooting and killing the man and then fleeing in the victim's gray 2015 Nissan Pathfinder. According to the Denver Post,

Officers responded to the store at 12300 W. 44th Ave. about 8 p.m. Thursday on reports of “suspicious activity” where they found the store clerk, who was also the owner, dead, according to the Wheat Ridge Police Department. Video surveillance showed the clerk being attacked by someone who then shot and killed him. The shooter then fled in the clerk’s vehicle.

Speeding Into an Arrest

Just before 10:30 on the morning of Friday, January 6, 2023, Indiana State Police Trooper Fulton was on patrol on Interstate 64 when he observed a gray Nissan traveling at more than 85 miles per hour. When the trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver of the vehicle refused to pull over and exited the interstate. Authorities say Chance reached speeds of more than 90 miles per hour before ultimately losing control of the vehicle. According to Indiana State Police,

The driver reached speeds in excess of 90 mph before losing control, leaving the roadway on the south side, rolling several times, and coming to a final rest in an open field. The driver was not injured and was taken into custody. A vehicle registration inquiry on the Nissan revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen from Wheat Ridge, CO, and may have been involved in a homicide on Thursday, January 5.

The Charges

Once authorities had Chance in custody and were able to determine that he was a suspect in the Colorado homicide investigation, they were able to place Chance under arrest. He is being held without bond in the Posey County Indiana Jail. Chance is facing the following charges related to both the homicide in Colorado and the incident leading to his arrest in Indiana.

1. Murder (Being held for Colorado)

2. Resisting Law Enforcement, Level 6 Felony
3. Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Level 6 Felony
4. Reckless Driving, Class B Misdemeanor

Not The First Fugitive Captured in Southern Indiana

Chance certainly is not the first fugitive captured in Southern Indiana in recent months. You may remember the story of the Alabama convict and the corrections officer that was on the run. There was a nationwide manhunt for the couple before they were located in Evansville. There is even a made-for-TV-movie in the works.
