So far, Winter 2024/2025 has been pretty uneventful for most of Illinois, but are the mild temps and low snow count about to disappear? Let's find out.
As we approach the first day of February, it's perfectly okay for you to want to know a few things about the coming Spring. Will it be warmer than normal? Colder? Snowier? Wetter? Drier? Here's what the weather prognosticators are saying about Spring 2025 in Illinois.
Well, regardless of the new name for windchill, it's still the same thing: how much colder the wind makes the actual temperature feel like to human skin. I've always though "windchill" was a great description of what weather feels like when you add in some cold, gusty winds, but it's pretty clear that the people who give names to weather phenomenons don't much care what I think.
It may seem like winter-like conditions are still pretty far away, but I should remind you that in some years, we've already had our first snowfall in Northern Illinois by now. Well, it hasn't snowed yet...but here's when it more than likely will snow for the first time this season.
What's going on with the atmosphere? Well, I'm reading all sorts of things about solar flares, solar eruptions, and something called a "solar maximum." Whatever the exact scientific explanation may be, the bottom line is that your chances to see the Aurora Borealis from Illinois still remain very good for the next few days...maybe longer.
