I don't know if you noticed, but this is a banner year for potholes. I'm sure that city crews will be busier than ever during the annual pothole blitz.

Potholes are formed when water works its way into cracks in the road's surface. When the weather gets cold, the water freezes and expands. The pavement will then bubble up due to the swelling water and ice. Normal road traffic over these spots breaks the pavement to the form of potholes.

These potholes can cause some serious damage to your car, so the best way to avoid damage is to avoid potholes.

Best two pieces of advice, slow down and don't tailgate. Speed and major holes in the pavement are not friends and no matter how fast you go you can't fly over the pothole. Tailgating reduces how much road surface you see and makes it impossible to avoid a pothole.

If you do slam into a pothole, stop and check for damage and if you notice a change in the handling or steering you should get it checked at once.
