I Ate 42 Hamburgers During Owensboro Burger Week and I Lost 3 Pounds
I know you're here because of that tantalizing (and appetizing) headline. You're probably salivating. Your jowls are likely slobbery and your curiosity is piqued. Well, I have some good news to share with you right off the bat (or the bun). I'm not kidding. I have indeed lost three pounds each of the last two Owensboro Burger Weeks and I think I may know why.
Now, that said, I have something else to tell you before I go on. This is VERY important. I am not registered dietician. I am not a medical professional. I am not a weight loss expert. I am simply a raging carnivore standing in front of some burgers asking them to love him. The truth is- I freaking love Owensboro Burger Week. It's one of my favorite events in my hometown and I am pumped that it's right around the corner.

In 2025, I ate 42 of the 49 burgers that were served up by our local restaurants and food trucks. And, yes. I actually lost weight. Again! The same thing happened back in 2024 when I ate 40+ burgers in a week. How is it possible that I ate like I was prepping for hibernation, but still lost weight? As I mentioned, I think I have an explanation.
When you think about it, Owensboro Burger Week is basically a gigantic Atkins Diet.
WHAT IS THE ATKINS DIET?
The Atkins Diet, which was developed in the early 70s, was relatively simple in concept. Basically, folks on the Atkins Diet were encouraged to eat a diet high in protein and fat and low in carbs.
Here's a pretty decent explanation of how the diet's supposed to work.

For me, this is a direct parallel to my eating practices during Owensboro Burger Week. Sure, I am actually consuming some carbs with the hamburger buns, but I am eating a TON of protein and fat. My metabolism is running like Formula One engine.
IS THE ATKINS DIET HEALTHY?
But don't get any ideas. See, the Atkins Diet, though popular with the public, wasn't very popular with medical experts. The American Medical Association, the American Dietetic Association, and the American Heart Association, were all highly critical of the lack of nutritional balance that it seemed to cause.
But, from my standpoint, who cares? Again, clearly NOT a professional. For me, it's all about the meat. It's Owensboro Burger Week. It lasts exactly 10 days and that's very little time to eat a lot of burgers. I, like many of you, have plans to tackle, chew, and digest as many of them as possible. I'm gonna chew on cows like lions chew on zebras in the Masai Mara in Kenya. And heck! If I drop three pounds in the process, that's just some tasty sesame seeds on those forbidden buns.
Again, I'm a professional. Don't take any health advice from me at all. However, if you want to talk burgers . . .
