According to the Illinois State Police press release, this is a big increase in move-over law violation incidents as there were only 21 during 2023. The penalties for violation of what is known as "Scott's Law" are severe. Here is what the Illinois State Police say can happen.

"A person who violates the Move Over Law faces a fine of no less than $250 and no more than
$10,000 for a first offense. If the violation results in injury to another person, the violator’s driver’s
license will be suspended for a mandatory period of anywhere between six months and two
years."

Fortunately, in this case, neither the driver or the Illinois State Police officer were injured, but these type of accidents often do not have a happy ending. 12 of these move-over incidents in Illinois have resulted in injuries.
