Family Fun And Free Stories Under The Trees At Wesselman
Soaking Up the Last of Fall at Wesselman Woods 🍁
Last week, Ron gave us the heads-up that this past weekend would be one of our last chances to really soak up that beautiful fall foliage before it disappears for the season. And when Ron talks weather, I listen! So, I decided to take his advice and head straight into the heart of Evansville to one of my new favorite spots, Wesselman Woods.
Let me tell you, Wesselman Woods is pure beauty. It’s peaceful, full of color this time of year, and just has that cozy, fall energy that makes you want to slow down and take it all in. This weekend was even better because, if you had a library card, you got in for free! How cool is that?
Not only that, but they had story time under the trees — kids all bundled up, sitting under a blanket of colorful leaves, listening to stories being told out loud. It was honestly picture-perfect.
Take a Walk With Me At Wesselman
My first impression of Wesselman Woods? This is the spot for families, couples, and solo explorers who just want to breathe a little easier and connect with nature. Everywhere I turned, people were smiling. I met some sweet older folks out for their morning stroll, said hello to a few furry pups on leashes, and even watched a couple of kids scrimmaging a basketball game nearby. And yes, I did sneak over to the playground because I fully believe you’re never too old to swing.
Exploring the Wetlands — A Hidden Evansville Gem
One of the coolest parts of Wesselman Woods is that it’s connected to one of the largest urban wetlands in Indiana — the Howell Wetlands. If you haven’t been, you’re missing out! It’s one of only five urban wetland parks in the entire state, and it’s absolutely stunning year-round.
We’re talking about 35 acres of marshland, forest, and meadow — with hiking trails, wooden walkways, and bridges that make you feel like you’ve escaped the city completely. You might even spot wildlife like herons, wood ducks, muskrats, geese, and maybe even a deer or two if you’re lucky.
There are more than two miles of trails to explore, and if you’re into learning while you walk, they even offer staff-led programs and tours throughout the year.
Fall Feels and Fresh Air
By the end of the day, I got my steps in, snapped some pretty photos, and soaked in every last golden leaf I could before the trees go bare. It was also one of those moments where I felt more connected to my new home here in Evansville — like I finally found my place to unwind.
So, if you’ve been looking for an excuse to get outside, explore, or just swing like a kid again — Wesselman Woods is waiting for you. 🌳🍂
