How Gym Etiquette Helps Everyone Feel More Comfortable
Gym Etiquette 101: The Unwritten Rules That Make Everyone’s Workout Better
One thing that I realized can be scary as an adult is a gym. I'm serious, walking into the gym can feel overwhelming and intimidating. There can also be situations where you don't want to be around a certain piece of equipment because the person using it makes you not want to go anywhere near it. Especially if you’re new or getting back into a routine you want a clean, healthy environment where you can get in get your pump and get out. You don’t need to know every exercise or own the fanciest gear to fit in. A little gym etiquette goes a long way in making the space comfortable for everyone. I felt like this was the perfect time to write about this if your like me and trying to be healthier and stick with it this year. Here are the simple, unspoken rules that can instantly make you a great gym neighbor.
Wipe It Down When You’re Done
This one’s non-negotiable. If you use a machine, bench, or mat, wipe it down afterward. This is one of the big things that scare me about gyms especially when it comes to flu season. Gyms provide wipes and spray for a reason, and taking a few seconds to clean up shows respect for the next person. No one wants to sit in leftover sweat.
If You Lift It, Re-Rack It
Leaving weights scattered around the gym is a fast way to annoy everyone. If you’re strong enough to lift it, you’re strong enough to put it back. Re-racking weights keeps the gym organized and helps prevent injuries.
Respect Personal Space
Gyms can get busy, but that doesn’t mean hovering over someone mid-set or standing directly in front of the dumbbell rack while scrolling your phone. Give people room to move and focus. If you need equipment someone’s using, a polite “How many sets do you have left?” works every time.
Don’t Camp Out on Machines
This one gets under my skin. Rest time is important, but sitting on equipment while texting or scrolling through social media can slow everyone down. Be mindful during peak hours that your not the only one wanting to use a machine, keep things moving so others can get their workout in too.
Be Kind—Everyone Starts Somewhere
Be kind to others who are in the process of working on themselves but also remember to be kind to yourself. Not everyone knows how to use every machine, and that’s okay. Not everyone can lift the same amount of weight or run for the same period of time. Avoid staring, judging, or offering unsolicited advice. A smile, a nod, or simply minding your own workout can make the gym feel way more welcoming—especially for beginners.
Good Etiquette = A Better Gym for All
Gym etiquette isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being aware. When everyone puts in a little effort, the gym becomes a place people actually enjoy coming back to. And that’s a win for all of us.
