New Indiana Laws Go into Effect July 1, 2023: Here’s What You Need to Know
July 1, is kind of like the start of a new year when it comes to laws in Indiana.
Actually, the law-making process is generally a lengthy one, and a lot of bills don't make it through that process. The fiscal year begins in July, so that is why the new laws go into effect so far into the year.
New Indiana Laws Go into Effect July 1, 2023: Here's What You Need to Know
You would probably be surprised to see all of the new laws that go into effect July 1, in the Hoosier State. There were just as many Bills that did not make it into law.
- Lies No More
Police officers have been allowed to lie to juveniles in order to get them to spill details about criminal incidents. Senate Bill 415 puts an end to that.
Provides that a statement made by a juvenile during custodial interrogation in response to a materially false statement from a law enforcement officer is inadmissible against the juvenile.
- Law enforcement ‘buffer zone’
I have always said that I need some sort of buffer zone around me, and now for police officers, it's a law.
Provides that a person who knowingly or intentionally approaches within 25 feet of a law enforcement officer after the law enforcement officer has ordered the person to stop commits a Class C misdemeanor.
Several new laws are already stirring up controversy.
Requires schools to adopt policies and procedures concerning material alleged to be obscene or harmful to minors
Providing specialized firearms instruction to certain teachers, school staff, and school employees, and for providing counseling services to students, teachers, school staff, and school employees in the event of a school shooting. Creates a specialized firearms safety, education, and training curriculum for teachers, school staff, and school employees.
Allows pharmacists who meet certain requirements to prescribe and dispense hormonal contraceptive patches and self-administered hormonal contraceptives.
Provides that a school, an employee or staff member of a school, or a third party vendor used by a school to provide instruction may not provide any instruction to a student in prekindergarten through grade 3 on human sexuality. Requires a school to notify in writing at least one parent of a student, if the student is an unemancipated minor, of a request made by the student to change the student's name or pronoun, title, or word to identify the student.
Minors are Allowed in Restaurant Bars
In Indiana, children have not been allowed to be in the bar area of a restaurant. That's why that part is separated from the family dining area. This new law does away with that requirement.
Worksite Speed Control
If you have a heavy foot even through construction areas, you might want to start practicing going the speed limit. INDOT is setting up speed cameras in four different areas and if you are going even 11 miles over the speed limit, you will be mailed a ticket.
For reasons I don't know, it is now legal to own throwing stars. You can only have a dog or miniature horse as a service animal. If you are applying for a CDL you will need to watch an educational video on how to recognize, prevent, and report human trafficking.
If you own a restaurant and a third-party service is offering your food, you can put a stop to it. So, we could see some options in GrubHub go away.
