IHSAA is Looking for More Indiana High School Sports Officials
Why Indiana Needs More Sports Officials
I realize that (as of this writing) there are just a few weeks left in the school year, but I think that makes it the perfect time to share this information. The Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) is looking for people who are willing to step up to the plate (pun intended) and become an official/referee/umpire at Indiana high school sporting events.
What Is Causing The Shortage
It’s no secret that there has been a shortage of quality umpires and referees for youth sports. And if you’ve been to a youth sporting event, you probably know why. It’s not that the kids are disrespectful, and it’s probably not even the coaches who are causing problems. That leaves just one group of people to blame – the parents!

Look, I’ll be the first to point a finger at myself. I’ve been a baseball coach and dad for a long time, and I’m not proud of some of my actions/reactions over the years. I like to think that I have mellowed in my old age, but we have all been jerks to the refs and umps at some point. I think we forget that they are actually human beings, and they’re doing the best they can.

So, if you fancy yourself a sports fan and are looking for a way to get more involved, now’s your opportunity. Take a chance, step out of your comfort zone, and become an umpire or referee for the IHSAA.
How To Become A Referee Or Umpire
It’s baseball season right now, and the picture above is a group of umpires, but I’m going to assume that the IHSAA is looking for officials for all high school sports. If you’re interested, text “OFFICIAL” to 317-943-9030 to get started!
