Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is one of the all-time classics in musical theatre. It has been performed around the country for over 50 years, and now, Joseph has arrived on Evansville's westside, at F.J. Reitz High School.

What's the Story with Joseph and His Fancy Coat?

The story is about Joseph (from the Bible), but you don't have to be a theologian or even a casual Bible scholar to enjoy the show. Here is a brief synopsis, according to Playbill.com:

From the musical genius of Andrew Lloyd Weber (Phantom of the Opera) and Tim Rice (Beauty and the Beast) comes one of the most popular musicals of the last 50 years. This telling of the biblical story of Joseph and his brothers is filled with great music, costumes, laughter, joy, and heart. Utilizing many different styles of music from pop/rock to country to musical comedy this sparkling show follows young Joseph as he faces adversity and triumphs through his dreams and his strong, unwavering faith.

The Interesting Reitz-Joseph Connection

It's safe to say that the most famous person to portray the lead role in Joseph was 70s heartthrob Donny Osmond. With 2,000 performances from 1992 -1997, Osmond is considered by many to be "the" Joseph. Osmond, however, is not our favorite Joseph - that honor belongs to a man named Bill Hutton who was the original Joseph on Broadway in 1982. Why is Bill Hutton our favorite? Because he is from Evansville and is a graduate of F.J. Reitz High School. How cool is that?!

BiIl Hutton is featured in the following performance (he appears at the 3:45 mark).

See How Downtown Evansville Has Changed Over the Years

I find looking back on the way things used to be fascinating. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I'm living through the current time period. The conveniences of answering any question we have in seconds, or ordering practically anything we want or need and having it delivered to our doorstep is pretty sweet. But, there is something fun about seeing how things around us have evolved. As an Evansville native, and spending quite a bit of my time in downtown Evansville (that's where the station is located), I've always appreciated the older architecture of the buildings around the area. So, I dug into the Willard Library Archives to see how a few of those areas look now compared to then. Some have changed a little, others quite a bit, and a few don't even exist any more. Take a look.
