UE Students Step Up to Build 18 Yard Barns for Future Habitat Homeowners

I had to take an Agriculture class in High School and they made me build one thing. I can't even tell you what I built because I honestly don't think it has a name. It was wood that appeared to be a night stand of some sort, it had a door that opened the wrong way and it really just ended up being a stand for my mom's printer at home. It also took me months to build this. I bring this up because nearly 200 students and faculty from the University of Evansville spent part of their weekend building 18 yard barns for future Habitat for Humanity homeowners right here in Evansville! How amazing is that?

Instead of taking it easy on a Saturday, (and taking forever to build something like I do) they rolled up their sleeves, grabbed their tools, and got to work side-by-side with the future families who will one day call these houses home. They were also joined by Habitat’s incredible Core Crew, the dedicated volunteers who give at least 80 hours of service every year to help make projects like this happen.

What I love most about this is that it wasn’t about construction experience or knowing how to swing a hammer perfectly. Habitat leaders say no experience is needed at all just willing hands and a heart to help.

It’s such a great reminder of what makes Evansville special. When students, faculty, volunteers, and future homeowners all come together, they’re not just building barns they’re building hope, pride, and a stronger community for local families.
