Is It Illegal to Drive Barefoot in Indiana? Here’s What You Need to Know

I grew up in Illinois but there were rules my parents were strict about growing up, especially when it came to driving. One of those things a lot of us grew up hearing “Don’t drive barefoot, it’s illegal!”

But is it actually true?

Turns out, in Indiana, driving barefoot is completely legal. There’s no state law that says you have to wear shoes while driving, so you’re not going to get pulled over just for kicking off your flip-flops or going barefoot on a warm day. With spring right around the corner, I know I will be one to drive barefoot, even if I have sandals on - when I'm driving their coming off.

However… there is a little more to the story.

Even though it’s legal, Indiana law does require drivers to stay in full control of their vehicle at all times. So if driving barefoot causes you to lose control, slows your reaction time, or contributes to an accident, you could still be cited for careless or reckless driving.

So technically legal? Yes.
Always a good idea? Not necessarily.

In fact, some experts say barefoot driving might actually be safer than wearing certain types of shoes especially flip-flops or loose sandals that can slip off or get caught under the pedals. That’s when things can get dangerous fast.

On the flip side, driving without shoes can also reduce grip or make it harder to apply consistent pressure on the pedals, especially in an emergency situation. Also, keep in mind if you were to ever get in accident, your feet would be exposed and you could receive a citation.

That’s why most safety professionals agree the best option is simple: wear a secure, closed-toe shoe with good traction when you’re behind the wheel.

Bottom line

Driving barefoot in Indiana won’t get you a ticket but unsafe driving absolutely will.

So if you’re heading out this summer and thinking about going barefoot, just remember: it’s not about what’s on your feet… it’s about staying in control behind the wheel.
