Why Everyone in Owensboro Should Know About This Concert
The Steep Canyon Rangers are coming to Owensboro this Friday, October 9th, and I want to make sure you know about this show because you should go!
They've earned a Grammy Award, a spot in the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, years of incredible music, and impressive names in their performance history. They recently shared the stage with Steve Martin and Martin Short, and now they're bringing their music to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum.
I had the chance to talk with Barrett Smith from the band about the show, their new album Next Act, and what they have been up to lately. I'll have that interview embedded below, and I think you'll enjoy hearing what he has to say about coming to town.
And I have to say, this show hits a little closer to home for me because my dad LOVED bluegrass music. I mentioned that to Barrett during our conversation, and I told him my dad would have absolutely loved the Steep Canyon Rangers. I KNOW he would have.
So let's talk about why you should be excited about this one.
A New Album and a Whole Lot of Bluegrass
The Rangers released Next Act, their 15th studio album, back in May. It's a bit of a homecoming for the band, getting back to the bluegrass roots that brought them together in the first place.
They've spent years mixing bluegrass with Americana, folk, great storytelling, and some seriously impressive musicianship. When I talked with Barrett, I described some of the new music as a gritty mix of Americana, folk, and bluegrass. He liked that description, so I'm going with it!

Six Musicians. One Great Night.
The Steep Canyon Rangers are Graham Sharp on banjo and vocals, Mike Guggino on mandolin and mandola and vocals, Aaron Burdett on guitar and vocals, Nicky Sanders on fiddle and vocals, Mike Ashworth on drums, dobro, percussion, and vocals, and Barrett Smith on bass, guitar, and vocals.
And they're bringing all of that talent to Owensboro.
The show is Friday, October 9th, at the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum.
Doors open at 6:00 PM, with the concert starting at 7:00 PM.
Preferred seating is $42 and reserved seating is $35. Bar and concessions will be available.
That's a pretty affordable night out for a band with this kind of resume!
Don't Miss This One
I'm a little surprised we haven't talked about this show more often.
Maybe people don't know they're coming.
So, now you know!
If you love bluegrass, this is an easy one. If you love Americana or folk music, you'll find plenty to like here, too. And if you appreciate sitting in a beautiful venue and listening to musicians who really know what they're doing, put this one on your Friday night calendar.
And before you head to the show, check out my conversation with Barrett below. We talked about Owensboro, the new album, what the band has been doing, and what you can expect when they hit the stage Friday night.
Take a listen!
