Nearly Half of Kentuckians Have Given Up a Hobby Because It Got Too Expensive
My happy place? A good book, a messy art table, or convincing myself I can totally redo a room with “just a few small updates.” But have you noticed lately that even our fun little hobbies are starting to feel expensive? Turns out, I’m not the only one clutching my wallet in the craft aisle.
When Your “Little Hobby” Adds Up
A recent survey from CGTrader found Kentuckians spend about $73 a month on their favorite hobby. That doesn’t sound too wild until you start adding up paint, plants, baking supplies, or that stack of books you had to have.
Here’s the part that surprised me: 45% of people in Kentucky say they’ve actually given up a hobby because it got too expensive. That’s nearly half of us deciding something we love just doesn’t fit the budget anymore.
And the most popular hobbies here? Reading. Cooking or baking. Gardening. Just good, wholesome, everyday fun. Nothing flashy. Just simple things that make life sweeter.
As someone who always has a book on the nightstand and at least one creative project taking over the house, I feel this in my soul. Those “quick trips” to grab one or two things? They’re never one or two things. Can you relate?
A Quick Look at What People Are Doing for Fun
Wondering what Americans actually do for fun these days? Reading and book clubs top the list, perfect for anyone who loves getting lost in a story (or sneaking in a little me-time). Cooking and baking come in hot right behind, because who doesn’t love trying a new recipe? Video games, puzzles, and even travel round out the top five, proving hobbies come in all shapes, sizes, and budgets. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re flipping pages, painting, or tackling a DIY project in the living room.
Cutting Back, or Getting Clever
About a third of folks say they’ve had to scale back because of costs. But I love this part. 20% are actually making money from their hobby. That feels very Kentucky to me. If it’s going to cost more, we’ll find a way to make it pay for itself.
It does make me curious, though. Have you stopped doing something you used to love because it got too pricey? Or have you found a creative workaround?
Because at the end of the day, we all need something that’s just for fun! A little escape. A little joy. Even if we have to get a bit resourceful to keep it going.
