I had been wanting to experience the Louisville Mega Cavern for years, and so we decided, in 2021, to tour Lights Under Louisville, the annual Christmas light extravaganza beneath Derby City.

It did not disappoint.

Lights Under Louisville Returns -- Bigger and Better Than Ever

However, you do need to be aware--and it shouldn't come as a surprise--that the line is very long, and it won't be a bad idea to bring something to do while you wait in line. That's right, you will not constantly be moving. But, again, it's worth it.

The only underground light show in the world, Lights Under Louisville has become a holiday tradition for families across the country. If you've never been, here's what you can expect:

Louisville Mega Cavern’s Lights Under Louisville returns with more than 40 themed displays, multiple projection areas, over 900 lit characters, new exciting themes, two laser locations, multiple light tunnels, holiday music and over 6,500,000 points of light and the only domestic holographic Santa.

What's New at Lights Under Louisville?

This is the first year for the all-new holographic Santa Claus. Additionally, in 2023, Lights Under Louisville will last longer than it ever has. The one-mile trek under Louisville through all those amazing displays will take you about 30 minutes once you get in there.

Please bring your camera and take all the pictures you can, but follow these guidelines for the best possible experience:

* Turn Headlights OFF
* Do Not Exceed IDLE Speed
* Stay In Vehicle At All Times
* Stay On The Lighted Route
* No Smoking
* No Stopping Along Route

When It's Not Christmas in the Louisville Mega Cavern

Because Lights Under Louisville is arguably the Mega Cavern's most popular attraction, I was unaware of the other events that take place there until just a few years ago. In fact, the Mega Cavern Zipline sees tourists and locals throughout the year.

You might want to keep that in mind once the holidays over. But until such time, the Mega Cavern will host thousands of visitors ready to enjoy what's an integral part of the holiday celebration for so many.

Lights Under Louisville begins Friday, November 10th and will be open through January 1st, 2024.

The Louisville Mega Cavern is a must. After driving through Lights Under Louisville, we'll be returning for whatever the attraction presents, regardless of the holiday. It's fascinating and tons of fun.
