Christina Richardson and Katie Fenwick are both Directors of Teacher Education at Kentucky Wesleyan College. Yesterday, they reached out to me to share an amazing collaboration their future teachers have been working on with Newton Parrish Elementary.

Ten teacher education majors have been visiting Newton Parrish for the past month to observe and work on a poetry project with 95 fourth graders! They would meet at the school and help the kids brainstorm, write, and type up their own poems. This undertaking was inspired by the book Love That Dog, about a boy who learns how to embrace creativity to express his feelings and emotions.

Today, October 2nd, from 9- 11 AM, these amazing students will share what they have brought to life. Christina shared, "We are turning the Wells Auditorium into a poetry cafe, with a gallery wall of the kids’ poems and refreshments, and the kids will read their poems on the stage." How adorable!

Families and community members are welcome and encouraged to attend. Teachers and students alike are so excited to share what they have been working on. You never know; the next poet laureate may be in our midst! At the very least, these kids have all benefited from a valuable and "cup-filling" experience.

These community collaborations are so cool because everyone wins. This is the first of its kind in the teacher education program, but it has been so successful that they are hoping to do it again in the future.
