Recently, in this space, we profiled the unique roadside motel that is Wigwam Village No. 2 in Cave City KY--a town full of kitschy, nostalgic fun.

But you'll need to venture away from the Interstate 65 corridor, and all it as to offer, if you want to spend the night inside truly unusual accommodations--well...maybe not unusual for Kentucky.

Campgrounds across the country often lean into whatever their respective states are known for. A good example would be the Borealis Basecamp near Fairbanks AK where, you guessed it, visitors can sleep in igloos. And in New Mexico, there are campsites among the dunes of the White Sands National Monument.

Camping in a Bourbon Barrel in Kentucky

But those are SUCH long drives. I'm sure you'd want something a little friendlier, in terms of distance, for your outdoor getaway. And if you want that outdoor getaway to be TOTALLY Kentucky, how about spending the night inside a bourbon barrel? Don't worry; it isn't as cramped as it sounds.

There you go. There's your warm welcome to Bourbon Barrel Retreats in Lawrenceburg KY in Anderson County.

If it's Kentucky, there's gotta be SOME type of bourbon reference, bourbon-themed restaurant, or, in this case, a bourbon-themed campground. But it's not JUST a theme. And if you've never heard of this campsite, there's a good reason; it's only been in business a handful of days:

Did you see the pillow at the 23-second mark? "Call me old-fashioned?"

Super clever. Here, take a closer look:

The website for this new and promising business invites you to "stay in a barrel in the middle of bourbon country," and I can't think of a better idea for a specialty cottage in Kentucky, can you?

And, hey, listen...while you're there, venture into Lawrenceburg, a "nice slice of Americana", as the city/county tourism commission calls it.

Is fall camping your thing? Well then, take advantage of these unique new digs in central Kentucky, where it's much better to be IN a barrel than over one.

Fulfill Your 'Yellowstone' Fantasies at The Double J Riding Stables & Horseman's Campground in Western KY

The Double J Riding Stables & Horseman's Campground is situated off the Northeastern corner of Mammoth Cave National Park in Western Kentucky. What drew me to the campground is that they offer horse-friendly campsites for those who have their own horses and also guided horseback trail rides for those who don't!

Our family LOVES horses but we currently don't have a horse for everyone in the family so this would be a perfect solution to get everyone the chance to play cowboy and live out all their Yellowstone fantasies!
