In the middle of July or August, we're always looking to beat the heat. We lower the thermostat to 63 and sleep with the fan on. We make a mad dash for our vehicle's air conditioning like our lives depended on it. We contemplate pouring the lemonade on our heads instead of down our throats. Whatever it takes, right?

I'm guilty of the first two, but I'd switch out at least one night on my cool and comfortable Serta sleeper for a night in an "ice cave." Well, it's an ice-cave-themed hotel room, but I got cold watching Doctor Zhivago in a warm classroom, so I'll trust the vibe to do the trick.

Arctic Cave Suite in Florence, Kentucky

First of all, this is nothing like those ice hotels that are so popular in Scandinavian countries, but it might be the next best thing. You'll find the Arctic Cave Suite at Wildwood Inn in Florence, Kentucky, just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati.

The suite's walls look like glaciers. In fact, the entire room is supposed to look like it's made entirely of ice. A "melting glacier"-fed spa and a virtual fireplace only add to the ambience. Since we're on the topic, take a virtual tour, or a "pretty cool hotel tour," right here.

Themed Suites at the Wildwood Inn

If you'd prefer another vibe, the Wildwood Inn offers several themed suites. If glaciers aren't your thing, there's the Venetian, the Champagne Room, the Arizona Cave, the New Mexico Cave, the Cupid Suite, and the Kentucky Cave Suite, among many others. There's also the Rustic Country Suite, which was once known as the Hillbilly Suite.

There are also several themed family suites available.

If you're looking for an unusual getaway, and one that will also rope in the sights and sounds of the Cincinnati metro area, the Wildwood Inn could be your summertime north star.

LOOK: Inside McDonald's Failed Restaurant-Themed Hotel

McDonald's launched its Golden Arch Hotel concept with a pair of locations in Switzerland in 2001. Rooms included arches over the headboards and showers that were visible from the bedroom. Both locations closed less than two years after they opened.
