Sing these next lines in rhythm to the opening number of the musical Rent. Just do it. You'll thank me later. Ready?  Clear your throat. Find your pitch. Here you go!

September 26th. 7pm. Central Standard Time!

Okay, did you do it?? There's a reason I wanted you to. On Saturday, September 26th, Broadway star Anthony Rapp- who originated the role of "Mark" in Jonathan Larson's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Rent- is going to be taking the stage in downtown Owensboro. I'll be sitting down with him- in front of an undoubtedly packed house- to walk through his extraordinary career and discuss the life experiences that have inspired him to become one of the leading advocates for victims' rights.

Anthony and I are having that important conversation on behalf of New Beginnings Sexual Assault Support Services. That discussion will take place on stage at Theatre Workshop's Empress Theatre.

Full disclosure- I served as the Board Chair of New Beginnings for the last two years. In late 2024, our board made a commitment to launching a public education series that features prominent and recognizable figures with poignant stories to share. In 2025, we welcomed Maggie Nichols (Athlete A) to Owensboro.

This year, we are welcoming Broadway, TV, and film star Anthony Rapp to town. In addition to being synonymous with the musical and big-screen version of Rent, Rapp is also known for films like Dazed & Confused and School Ties, plus his TV work on Star Trek:Discovery.

He also starred Off-Broadway in an incredible, autobiographical, one-man show called Without You. I had the pleasure of seeing that show (in the front row) and I have also read the book it was based on. I am looking so forward to helping navigate the audience through Anthony's extraordinary life.

On the stage of the Empress we will take a deep dive into that "memoir of love and loss" and we'll discuss Anthony's experiences that have led him to speak on behalf of organizations like ours.

Tickets for the event- per our mission at New Beginnings- are FREE. However, space is limited. You must secure a ticket in order to attend. Those tickets are available NOW.

Please note! Reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and are limited to ONE TICKET PER PERSON. Quick additional note. All seating for the discussion is GENERAL ADMISSION. So, if you and your friends each secure a ticket, you should be able to sit together during the conversation. When all the tickets are claimed, we will build a WAIT LIST.
