Tri-State Temperatures Set to Plunge as Storms Move In
A White Christmas Feels Like a Distant Memory
I’ll admit, I always love having a white Christmas. It’s magical and nostalgic, and we haven’t had one in a while. This year, we were flirting with almost 70-degree temperatures. A few years back, we had a wicked cold front move through that busted a bunch of pipes, but it didn’t even snow. Boo!
After Christmas, It’s Back to Reality
Now that Christmas is over, it’s time to get back to business and I prefer no more snow until next Christmas! Here in the tri-state, January temperatures are usually below 30 degrees, but this year has felt very different. We’ve been enjoying some unusually warm days, even spending time outside in 60-plus degree weather this week. Still, just like the calm after the holidays, those balmy days are about to come to an end.
A Cold Front Moves In
High temperatures will reach near-record levels in the upper 60s to near 70 degrees today ahead of a cold front. That front will spread showers and thunderstorms across the area, mainly after sunset. A few storms could become severe, producing sporadic damaging wind gusts and possibly a tornado or two.
The main window for severe weather looks to be this evening into the overnight hours as storms move from west to east across the region. Even outside of thunderstorms, southerly winds will be gusty at times, with gusts between 30 and 40 mph possible from this afternoon into tonight.
Thursday and Friday Severe Weather Threat
A few severe thunderstorms remain possible into Thursday and Friday. Damaging winds and isolated tornadoes are the primary concerns. Gusty winds between 30 and 40 mph and more than an inch of rainfall are also possible.
We are currently in a marginal risk area, so widespread tornado damage is not expected. That said, the drastic temperature drop that follows could impact plants, animals, and unhoused individuals who may need a warm place to stay.
Temperature Drop
Though we have been enjoying these nice days, dust off your coat, hat, and mittens because we will see lows in the 20s this weekend. Here are the predictions from the National Weather Service:
