Traveling is a crazy time right now for people around the U.S.  TSA, check-in, and boarding - everything feels slower than usual because of the government shutdown.

Air traffic controllers have been working unpaid since the shutdown started, many clocking mandatory overtime six days a week.  Imagine the stress of trying to focus on one of the most high-stakes jobs in the world, guiding planes safely through the skies, while worrying about how to pay your own bills.  Some controllers have been struggling to even afford their own transportation to get to work!

The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) says flights are forced to be reduced by about 10% in "high-volume markets" across America.  That means travelers flying through some of the busiest airports, including Los Angeles, New York, and Fort Lauderdale, could see hundreds, if not thousands, of flights canceled or delayed.

A source told ABC News that the flight reductions will start at 4% on Friday and work up to 10%. The flights impacted by these reductions are scheduled during the hours of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. [msn]

When I was traveling recently, I noticed how tense the airport felt.  People were frustrated at the wait times, employees looked overworked and underpaid.  The holiday chaos of travelers just adds to the stress.  Major airlines, aviation unions, and travel organizations are all asking Congress to end the shutdown, calling it an "unnecessary strain on workers and passengers.  The longer it drags out, the worst it's going to get!

Two Illinois Airports Cutting Flights During Government Shutdown

If you've got a flight out of O'hare or Chicago Midway anytime soon, prepare for delays, bring your patience, and get there early for TSA. They're two of forty different airports seeing major flight cuts this season.

The FAA said it will consider various factors when finalizing the cuts, including airlines that already operate a less-than-daily service at an airport. [msn]

If you're a frequent traveler, these airports around the country are also seeing flight cuts:

  • Ronald Reagan Washington National
  • Denver International
  • Dallas/Fort Worth International
  • Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County
  • Newark Liberty International
