Free Southern Indiana Event Could Teach You How to Save a Life

Emergencies don't wait until someone with medical training is nearby.

A child could start choking. Someone could collapse from cardiac arrest. A serious cut could cause dangerous bleeding. An accidental overdose could happen in front of you. In those first few minutes before professional help arrives, knowing even a few basic first aid skills could make an enormous difference.

That's why I think an upcoming World First Aid Day event in Warrick County is worth putting on your calendar.

The Warrick County Health Department and local first responders are inviting the community to spend a few hours learning potentially lifesaving skills, and it's completely free.

Learn CPR, Stop the Bleed and More

World First Aid Day will take place Saturday, September 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Phoenix Event Center.

The event will feature hands-on demonstrations and information covering a wide range of emergency situations.

Visitors can learn Hands-only CPR, practice with a Heimlich maneuver simulator, learn about Stop the Bleed techniques, and see a demonstration of how to administer Narcan.

There will also be information and demonstrations covering EpiPens, mental health first aid, animal first aid, and safe sleep.

Families Can Get Car Seats Checked Too

The event isn't limited to emergency response skills.

Families can take advantage of car-seat safety checks, learn about bike helmets and first aid kits, and bring younger children along for teddy bear checkups.

And because learning about emergencies doesn't have to make for a stressful Saturday, organizers are adding plenty of family fun, too.

Food trucks and an inflatable bounce house are planned, along with emergency vehicles and a StatFlight helicopter.

You Don't Have to Be a First Responder to Help

Hopefully, you and I'll never have to use CPR, administer Narcan, or stop someone from bleeding while waiting for an ambulance.

But emergencies and accidents can happen anywhere at any time.

Knowing what to do during those first critical moments is one of those skills you may learn once and hope you never need. If the day ever comes when someone needs your help, however, you'll be really glad you did.

World First Aid Day is free and open to the community from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on September 12 at The Phoenix Event Center, 3433 Libbert Road, Newburgh.
