They say that if you love what you do you will never work a day in your life, and while a lovely thought, for many of us, even if we love what we do, it is still work and can be stressful. Just how stressful could depend on where you live according to a new study that names Tennessee as one of the ten most stressful states to work in.

There Are Plenty of Reasons to Be Stressed

Life in general these days seems more stressful than it did even a few years ago. Many of us are stuck in the collective shared trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath as we battle the evergrowing rate of inflation on our most basic needs paired with a lack of increase in the federal minimum wage.

Stressed By State

There is no doubt that a lot of factors are at play creating stress in our day-to-day lives, but what about our jobs themselves? Innerbody recently conducted a study diving into how stress levels, particularly in our work environments, fluctuate from state to state.

Considering that work takes up most people’s time and can interrupt sleep, keep you from the gym, and make or break your budget, we wanted to know what aspects of people’s work-life might be contributing. Given that such a large number of people appear to be seriously struggling with stress, we also wanted to know if the stress levels of American workers differed from state to state.

Measuring Stress

To determine how stressful the workforce is in each state, Innerbody combed through data from the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the National Right to Work Legal Defense and Education Foundation.

Analyzing Stress

Armed with the data, the folks at Innerbody broke things down into three categories: work-related stress, money-related stress, and health-related stress. The statistics were scored in several areas in each category to create a quantitative analysis for each state. The state with the lowest score was deemed to be the "most stressed out."

Stressors related to relationships, finances, work, and health are typically easy to identify. The daily hassles, too — such as running late, waiting in line, traffic, or spilling your coffee — are also relatively easy to notice. But not all factors that increase daily stress levels are so obvious. Our study revealed that the state in which you live can also be a significant contributory factor.

The Most Stressed Out State

After the calculations were complete and the scores were tallied, it was determined that Nevada tops the list. Not only did Nevada top the list overall, but it was also the #1 state for work-related stress, #8 for money-related stress, and #11 for health-related stress. Mississippi and West Virginia round out the top three.

The Volunteer State ranked #6 for work-related stress, #27 for money-related stress, and #9 for health-related stress. When it comes to stress, the overall results place Tennessee in the #9 spot on the list.
