One of Evansville's most beloved and most well-used parks is temporarily closed.

In 2018, the City of Evansville held a groundbreaking to officially launch the build for what was initially known as Kids Kingdom 2, but was later named Mickey's Kingdom, an expansive and inclusive playscape accessible to all regardless of their abilities.

A Beloved Evansville Landmark

Named after Mykenna "Mickey" Phernetton, who was the inspiration for both the annual Guns & Hoses Charity Boxing Event and 911 Gives Hope, Mickey's Kingdom became a reality resting along the Ohio River, thanks in part to a $320,000 by 911 Gives Hope to aid in the construction of the park.

Built Through Community Support

The initial build for the park was projected to cost around $1 million. That amount did not include in-kind donations or the countless hours donated by volunteers from around the community who worked to bring the park to fruition. All in total, the value of the project towered near $1.8 million or more, and it was funded through public, private, and corporate donations.

Over the years since the park was officially opened, regular cleanup and maintenance have taken place by volunteers organized through the Evansville Parks Department. However, we learned today that Mickey's Kingdom will be undergoing more extensive maintenance.

Temporary Closure for Upgrades

According to the Facebook page for the park, Mickey's Kingdom will be closed effective beginning today, October 3, 2025, and will remain closed through Sunday, October 12th.

According to the post, the playground is being resurfaced, and new equipment is being added as well. The public is asked to stay out of the park during the temporary closure to allow the new surfaces to dry completely.
