There’s a bittersweet update coming out of Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden.

The zoo has announced that Wednesday, its 11-year-old Bactrian camel, will soon be leaving Evansville for a new home.

Why The Zoo Made This Decision

Following the passing of her companion, Friday, back in August, zoo staff have been working to find a suitable companion for Wednesday.

After months of searching, they say they were unable to find the right match.

Because camels are social animals, living alone long-term is not ideal. Zoo officials say the decision to relocate her was made with her well-being as the top priority.

Where Wednesday Is Going

Wednesday will be moving to The Wilds, a conservation center covering more than 10,000 acres in Ohio, and also her birthplace.

There, she’ll be able to join a herd of other camels, giving her the social environment she needs to thrive.

A Bittersweet Goodbye For Evansville

While the move is ultimately good news for Wednesday, it’s still a tough goodbye for the zoo and the community.

She has been a familiar face at Mesker Park Zoo, and her departure marks the end of an era for camel lovers in Evansville.

When You Can Say Goodbye

Zoo officials are encouraging visitors to stop by and see Wednesday before she leaves.

They also suggest following The Wilds on social media to keep up with her next chapter once she arrives in Ohio.
