Good news for Hoosiers who love spending time outdoors.

More than 1,400 acres of forestland in northern Indiana are being added to the Indiana State Park system, creating even more opportunities for hiking, camping, fishing, horseback riding, hunting, and exploring some of the state's natural beauty.

The announcement comes from Governor Mike Braun and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, which revealed that both Salamonie River State Forest and Frances Slocum State Forest will soon transition from management by the Division of Fish and Wildlife to Indiana State Parks.

For outdoor enthusiasts, that's welcome news.

As someone who loves camping and spending time outdoors, I never complain about seeing more protected public land and more opportunities to get outdoors.

Two Forest Properties Joining Indiana State Parks

Beginning July 1, management of the two properties will shift to nearby state recreation areas.

Together, the properties add more than 1,400 acres to Indiana State Parks' growing portfolio of public recreation lands.

According to state officials, both properties will continue offering the outdoor recreation activities visitors already enjoy.

Camping, Hiking, Fishing, and Horseback Riding Will Continue

The transition will not eliminate existing recreational opportunities.

Visitors will still be able to enjoy:

  • Camping
  • Hiking
  • Fishing
  • Hunting
  • Horseback riding

Both properties will also maintain staffing.

For my fellow campers, there is another change worth noting. Primitive and horseman's campsites at Salamonie River State Forest will become available through the Indiana State Parks reservation system beginning in August for stays starting September 1.

Indiana State Parks System Continues to Grow

Governor Braun called Indiana's state parks some of the state's most cherished places, noting that they help families connect with nature while creating lasting memories.

The addition of Salamonie River and France Slocum expands an already impressive system that includes:

  • 24 Indiana State Parks
  • 8 reservoir properties
  • 7 satellite locations
  • State forest recreational areas
  • Off-road riding areas

For anyone who enjoys weekends around a campfire, mornings on a trail, or afternoons on the water, more protected public land is a win.

In a world where it often feels like open spaces are disappearing, seeing Indiana add more land dedicated to outdoor recreation feels like genuinely good news.
