When someone needs emergency shelter, figuring out where to go shouldn't require calling one place after another just to find out whether a bed is available.

A new resource from the Commission on Homelessness for Evansville and Vanderburgh County is designed to make that easier.

The organization has launched an Emergency Shelter Availability Dashboard that puts information about participating Evansville-area shelters, including their currently reported available beds, in one place.

See Evansville Shelter Availability Online

The web-based dashboard provides a list of participating emergency shelters throughout the Evansville area and shows the number of beds currently reported as available at each location.

The dashboard also includes information specific to each shelter, including contact information and other important details someone may need when seeking assistance.

According to the Commission on Homelessness, the information is updated daily, publicly accessible, and mobile-friendly.

That means the resources can be used not only by someone who needs emergency shelter themselves, but also by people trying to help someone else find a safe place to stay.

A New Resource for Addressing Homelessness in Vanderburgh County

The Commission on Homelessness says the dashboard was created to be a resource for both people seeking emergency shelter and those helping others secure shelter.

It is also one of the action items included in the community's strategic plan to alleviate homelessness in Vanderburgh County.

Having shelter information in one centralized location can simplify what may already be an overwhelming situation. Instead of trying to determine which shelters serve whom and where a bed might be available, users can begin their search with the information collected on the dashboard.

The Emergency Shelter Availability Dashboard can be accessed through the Commission on Homelessness website.
