If you recently picked up one of the popular weighted teddy bears from Build-A-Bear Workshop for your child, you may want to check the tag asap.

As a mom, stuffed animals are one of those things I automatically associate with comfort and safety, which is part of why recalls involving children's products always catch my attention a little faster.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Build-A-Bear has recalled approximately 36,000 Heartwarming Hugs weighted plush bears sold in the United States due to "risk of serious injury or death from choking hazard."

Recall Involves Build-A-Bear's Weighted Heartwarming Hugs Bear

The recall involves the Build-A-Bear Workshop Heartwarming Hugs Bear, a weighted plush teddy bear that includes a removable heart pouch filled with ceramic beads designed to be heated or cooled for comfort.

Officials say the zipper slider on the pouch can detach while in use, creating a potential choking hazard for children.

The product was marketed for children ages 3 and older and included safety warnings recommending adult supervision because of the heated and cooled insert.

The model number can be found on the label sewn into the back of one of the bear's legs.

No U.S. Injuries Have Been Reported

According to the recall notice, there has been one report in the United Kingdom involving the zipper slider detaching. No injuries have been reported in the United States.

The recalled bears were sold at Build-A-Bear Workshop stores and online between January 2026 and March 2026 for about $48.

What Parents Should Know

Consumers are being told to stop using the recalled bear immediately.

Customers can return the product to any local Build-A-Bear Workshop location for a refund issued either to the original payment method or as a store gift card.

For people unable to visit a store, Build-A-Bear says consumers can request a prepaid shipping label through the company's website to return the product and receive a refund.

Recalls like this can feel exhausting because it seems like we are constantly checking labels, ingredients, and safety notices, but this is also exactly why recalls matter. Even one defective product finding its way to a child's hands is one too many.

Additional recall information is available through Build-A-Bear's recall page.
