The Most Dangerous Interstate in Indiana Isn’t What You’d Expect

Indiana is known as the "Crossroads of America", but which of Indiana's interstates is the most dangerous?

While Indiana is full of roads that offer great scenery and make for a great Sunday drive, we also have a few sketchy roads throughout the state too. Whether they are very narrow, curvy, crowded with other drivers, or just full of potholes, I'm sure we can all think of a few roads that we tend to try to avoid for one reason or another. For the most part, the roads that I tend to avoid are the ones that are downright dangerous because of heavy traffic and careless drivers. These roads include major highways, expressways, and interstates throughout Indiana.

The Most Dangerous Interstate in Indiana

There's a recent study from the insurance site, Assurance, that found the most dangerous interstate in each state. They looked at data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to determine the most and least safe interstates across the country according to the number of fatal accidents. If you had to take a guess as to what Indiana's most dangerous interstate is, which one would you pick?

If you picked I-94, you would be correct. However, I don't know if many people would have guessed I-94. Personally, I figured it would have been I-64 or I-65, but somehow neither was named as the most dangerous interstate. While, I-94 only runs through a small portion of northern Indiana, still somehow, it is more dangerous than any other interstate that runs through the state. I-94 has a ranking of 3.04 fatal crashes per every 10 miles. Furthermore, I-94 is the ninth-longest interstate in the country, runs east-west, and is considered the most dangerous interstate in four states: Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, and Michigan. I-94's highest ranking is in Illinois, where I-94 averages 4.23 fatal crashes per 10 miles.
