One Indiana city was named the most unhealthy in the state, and it might not be the city you'd expect.

We live in a world now where most people are more health conscious than they were twenty years ago, and for good reason. We only get one life, one body. It's best to take care of it the best you can. This is especially true when it comes to the food that we eat. Now look, I'll be the first to admit that fried food and Hamburger Helper are delicious, and I eat more of it than I probably should. The older I get, the more I realize that I can't eat like I used to back in the day. It used to be, that I could eat all of that food that I wanted and not gain a pound. Now, it seems like I eat it once in a blue moon and I gain five pounds.

Then there are other factors that can cause an unhealthy lifestyle. Factors such as the quality of the local health care system, public health policy, culture, environment, and the economy can all have an impact on the overall health of an area. Recently, 24/7 Wall St. compiled a list of the most unhealthy city in each state. Before we get into which Indiana city was named the "most unhealthy," let's first talk about how the website came to its conclusions

Here's what 24/7 Wall St. had to say about compiling the data to discover the most unhealthy cities across the country:

To measure and rank the health of the population in cities in every state, 24/7 Tempo calculated an index using eight health measures such as potential life lost, smoking rate, and percentage reporting fair or poor health, using data from the 2023 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps program of the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. In all, 384 metro areas were considered to determine the least healthy one in every state. Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Delaware each have only one metro area, and it is therefore listed here by default – though by default, it is also the state’s healthiest metro area.

The Most Unhealthy City in Indiana

Now, if I were to have guessed which city would have received this distinction, I probably would have guessed Evansville. That's only because, at one point in time, it was named the most obese city in the country, but that has changed a lot over time. So, which city is the most unhealthy in Indiana? According to 24/7 Wall St., it's Muncie. Here's the data for Muncie:

  • Adults in fair or poor health: 17.3% (state: 15.1%)
  • Adult smoking rate: 22.5% (state: 20.2%)
  • Adult obesity rate: 40.1% (state: 37.2%)
  • Median household income: $50,497 (state: $62,743)

That being said, it doesn't mean that Muncie isn't a great place to live:

Outside the major cities, the Hoosier state is full of tiny little towns you've probably passed through on your way to one of those cities. Most of them are likely 100 to 150 years old, or older, and have been around far longer than the large metropolitan areas such as Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, South Bend, and Evansville. Typically, they were started by early settlers who found their way to the state and decided to make it home. Eventually, others would join them, and a community was formed. Over time, as the surrounding areas grew, most of them were folded into those areas and governed by the nearest city or county's governing body officially making them "unincorporated," meaning they did not have their own formally organized municipal government.

A scroll through Wikipedia's long list of unincorporated communities in Indiana shows several of them have names that by today's standards would be considered weird, quirky, or just downright right funny. These are my 40 favorities.
