Remembering Fearless Taylor Swift

In 2009, Taylor Swift went out on her first headlining tour, and the first stop was incredibly important to her.  Many artists previously chose Evansville to kick off their concerts due to preliminary rehearsal needs and demands.  With Evansville being so close to Nashville, it’s a convenient city for artists to practice their tour performances prior to going on tour.  This is what Taylor Swift did before her Fearless tour…right here in Evansville.  Swift was reportedly in the tri-state area, on and off, for weeks leading up to her show, flying under the radar until days before her show when she was spotted at Cracker Barrel.  While this convenience is the common reason for artists choosing Evansville, it’s not the reason Taylor Swift did.  According to Taylor, a group of young fans from Evansville had been following her from her first show ever.  Being the payback kind of gal Taylor is (both in love and dislike), she made sure to kick off the most important tour of her life (at the time) at Roberts Stadium. My, how the times have changed.

How do I know all of this? I was there…she told me.  As part of the WKDQ staff, we assisted in some of the behind-the-scenes aspects of the show and minor details of Taylor’s security.  In fact, if you’re bored, you can find me in the Fearless DVD (below) holding back a throng of screaming little girls as Taylor was walking through the corridor backstage. The entire event was magical, and without a doubt, the best experience of my radio career. I spoke with her mother, Andrea, that night and asked if she was scared of how famous Taylor would become, neither of us having a clue what heights she would reach. While I don't remember her exact response, I remember she had the utmost confidence in her daughter. When people ask me about all of the cool people I get to meet, I always tell them the most genuine one, then and now, is Taylor Swift.

The Actual Thank You Card From Taylor Swift

The Fearless Tour had come and gone, trailblazing across the country, setting records along the way. Somewhere in her so-called spare time, Taylor sent thank-you cards to God-only-knows how many people who were involved in her first show. What I do know is that I was one of those lucky people. I remember going to the mailbox and seeing a wax-sealed envelope with only the word "Swift" in the upper left-hand corner. I thought, "NO WAY," as I ran to the house to get a letter opener. On fancy stationery, Taylor had written a personal note to thank me for my involvement with her first big tour. My favorite part? She drew a stick-Taylor at the bottom. It's the little things in life that matter so much, and this little note from Taylor Swift will forever take me back to that night when we all jumped aboard a train we had no clue was Fearlessly going to rule the world.
