Music Therapy Is A Huge Part Of St. Jude

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is the most magical place for children facing and fighting cancer. Striving to find an absolute cure for children's cancer, St. Jude has made major strides in the process. The hospital opened in 1962 at a time when childhood cancer was widely believed to be incurable. The overall survival rate in the United States was only 20 percent. Thanks to St. Jude and the incredible progress they've made, now the survival rate is 80 percent! However, 100 percent is the goal, and we're not there yet!

What Is The Heartbeat Song?

St. Jude has music therapy in several variations, but music therapist Amy Love creates heartbeat songs to provide a forever memory for the children and their families. Using a small telescope-like recording device, she records each child's heartbeat and then records a song to the beat of the heart.

"During ultrasounds, the heartbeat is the first sound that parents hear in relation to their child. It is a representation of life and it is the rhythm that we carry within each of us. Music is therapeutic. Research shows that music is the only thing that lights up all of our brain at once. Music helps build fine motor skills, improves concentration and task orientation, and assists with reading and learning a language." -Music therapist Amy Love

Healing harmony is one of many therapies that bring hope to children with cancer at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Check out the video below for more information on the music therapy program and to hear an example of a heartbeak song.
