Southern Indiana Movie Theaters Hosting 85th Anniversary Screening of ‘The Wizard of Oz’
One of the most beloved movies of all time turns 85 years old in 2024 and one southern Indiana movie theater chain is celebrating by bringing it back to the big screen for a special three-day screening.

Released on August 25th, 1939, The Wizard of Oz wasn't the first movie to be in color, but it is widely credited for revolutionizing the use of color in film with its nearly seamless transition from black-and-white early in the film when Dorothy is in Kansas to full-color once she arrives in the Land of Oz.
Although not a critical or box office success when it was first released, according to Britannica, the film has stood the test of time to become an American classic and was added to the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry in 1989. Despite its age, it has millions of fans worldwide to this day, many of whom weren't even born when it was released including my mom and sister who were born 15 and 46 years after it hit theaters, respectively.
It's spawned sequels, a popular Broadway musical (Wicked), and even a theme park in North Carolina.
Showplace Cinemas Hosting 85th Anniversary Screening of The Wizard of Oz
Evansville-based movie theater chain, Showplace Cinemas has partnered with Fathom Events to bring this iconic movie back to the big screen for a three-day run on January 28th, 29th, and 31st at two of its locations in the area, Showplace East on Morgan Avenue in Evansville and Showplace Jasper at 256 Brucke Strasse. Both locations will have a 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM screening on January 28th and one screening at 7:00 PM the remaining days.
Tickets for the screenings are available now for $12.50 each through the Showplace East and Showplace Jasper pages of the theater's website.
