I've never personally been a big craft beer consumer, but I do really enjoy the local festivals that feature beer gardens and taste testing. The atmosphere is usually really vibrant, and it's always a great time. That said, there is some news in the world of craft beer that may be a bit surprising to regular tap house goers.

According to Just Drinks, craft beer production in the United States dipped by just over 5% in 2023, and craft brewery closure rates rose to 4% during the same year. In Indiana, specifically, 11 breweries closed their doors for good, as highlighted in a Facebook post by Indiana Beer & Spirits News. This is likely news that no craft beer drinker wants to hear, but luckily, there is more to the story.

Brewers of Indiana Guild is a non-profit that promotes the craft beer industry throughout the Hoosier State. According to their website, about 200 craft breweries are currently operating in Indiana, employing around 10,000 people. The Executive Director of the organization, Julia Whitson, recently told Axios Local that part of the decline in production is due to the fact that more breweries are experimenting with CBD-focused drinks along with distilling. In essence, the decline in production isn't just because fewer people are taking an interest in craft beer.

The demand for craft beer may not be what it once was in the 2010s, but there is certainly still a market for it, and I don't see that going away anytime soon. While some businesses have closed, there could be many reasons for that, ranging from licensing issues to simply "tapped-out" owners ready for retirement. (See what I did there?) There are a lot of great breweries in the tri-state area that provide phenomenal products, and if you're in the mood for a brew, I'm sure you would be welcome. Cheers!
