Here's some good news, only parts of Indiana will see these broods emerge, but when will that happen?

Cicadageddon 2024

Like many, I've heard the news about two cicada broods emerging this year, and some have dubbed I "cicadageddon."  However, I thought both broods were going to emerge at once and all of a sudden we would have cicadas everywhere.  Well it turns out the cicadas will emerge, but Indiana won't see the two broods simultaneously, as the two broods are emerging in different areas.

While it's still interesting because according to Purdue a duel emergence is quite rare, it doesn't mean we will just be hammered with cicadas.

For the first time in 221 years, two different broods of cicadas — the 17-year Brood XIII and the 13-year Brood XIX — will appear in parts of Indiana and other states. A dual emergence is rare, according to Dr. Gene Kritsky of Cincinnati’s Mount St. Joseph University.

The two broods are emerging in completely different parts of the Hoosier state, and their paths shouldn't cross.

Where Are the Ciada Broods Going to Emerge?

According to WTHR, the two broods will be at opposite ends of the state. Brood XIII which is the 17-year brood will be in the northwestern corner of Indiana.  Brook XIX which is the 13-year brood is located in the Southwestern part of Indiana from Terre Haute to Evansville.  The broods typically don't leave the area they are from, so we shouldn't notice a super huge increase in cicadas around Indiana.

When Will the Broods Emerge in Indiana?

The two broods will emerge at different times. WTHR estimates that Brood XIX (the one in southwestern Indiana) will emerge in early May, but due to warmer temps they may emerge even sooner.   They estimate that Brood XIII will emerge around mid-may.
