The 10 Most Destructive Tornadoes in Illinois History

So far this year, Illinois has recorded more tornado reports than any other state in America. The Land of Lincoln sadly has a long history of deadly twisters with 10 tornadoes that were more destructive than any others in history.

As of the date of this writing, Illinois currently has nearly double the amount of tornado reports than any other state in the country. It seems that 2026 in particular has seen a destructive pattern that brings explosive storm development over Illinois every 4 or 5 days repeatedly. There are those that believe that tornado alley has shifted eastward from Kansas and Oklahoma to now include Missouri and Illinois. You won't find many in Illinois that would debate that fact.
