I was under the impression that Florida was one of the top destinations for people fleeing other states. Apparently, I had that backwards as there is new evidence showing that there is currently an exodus happening from the Sunshine State and many are heading directly toward Illinois.

The Daily Mail just dropped this frightening (for the rest of us that don't live in Florida) story about a "Worst case scenario of Florida real estate crisis revealed as desperate residents flee". What the? The short version of their story is implying is that a large number of Florida residents either own or rent condominiums and that market is having a disastrous year with bankruptcies potentially incoming and prices/rates skyrocketing.

Insurance is another issue entirely with those costs soaring, too. It's a perfect storm (no hurricane pun intended) leading many in Florida to seek their lifestyle elsewhere.

What does this have to do with Illinois?

A story this year from WFLA says that approximately 14,000 Florida residents left the state for Illinois just 2 years ago. It's possible you could multiply that number by 2 or 3 by next year.

I have friends in Florida and don't want to hurt any feelings, but nearly the entire Smoking Gun website is dedicated to insane things that happen in the Sunshine State. Illinois is crazy enough as it is and if an exodus happens to come pouring in from Florida...well, it's been nice knowing you.
