1930 — Bobby Jones became the first golfer to win all four major tournaments in a single year by capturing the US national amateur championship at the Merion Cricket Club in Ardmore, Pa. (More info.)

1950 — Ezzard Charles beat Joe Louis in their fight at Yankee Stadium in New York to win the heavyweight boxing title. (More info.)

1973 — Nolan Ryan of the California Angels struck out 16 Minnesota Twins to set the single-season, MLB record of 383 strikeouts while winning the game, 5-4, in 11 innings at Anaheim Stadium. (More info.)

1980 — Marvin Hagler scored a technical knockout of Britain’s Alan Minter in the third round of their fight at Wembley Arena in London to win the world middleweight championship. Partisan fans nearly rioted after the decision was announced. (More info.)

1992 — The Pittsburgh Pirates clinched their third straight National League East title by defeating the New York Mets, 4-2, at Three Rivers Stadium. (More info.)

1998 — Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals hit two home runs off of Montreal Expos pitchers at Busch Stadium in St. Louis to lift his MLB record-setting seasonal total to 70. (More info.)

2000 — American heavyweight Rulon Gardner upset Aleksandr Karelin of Russia to win the gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling at the Summer Olympics in Syndey, Australia. Karelin had not lost in 14 years of international competition. (More info.)

2005 — The Atlanta Braves clinched their 14th straight division title. (More info.)
