1973 — Fred Dryer of the Los Angeles Rams scored two safeties in the same game. (More info.)

1975 — Carlton Fisk hit a 12th-inning home run, which he begged to stay fair by waving his arms, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Cincinnati Reds, 7-6, at Fenway Park in Game 6 of the World Series to force a seventh and deciding game. (More info.)

1976 — The Cincinnati Reds won Game 4 of the World Series, 7-2, at Yankee Stadium to sweep New York and win their second straight title. (More info.)

1979 — Grete Waitz finished first in the women’s field of the New York City marathon for the second consecutive year. (More info.)
