Here are just some of the notable sports moments that happened on August 10:

1928 — American swimmer Johnny Weissmuller set a new Olympic record in the semifinals of the 100-meter freestyle at the Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. (More info.)

1929 — Pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander of the St. Louis Cardinals won the 373rd and final game of his career by defeating the Philadelphia Phillies, 11-9, at Shibe Park in Philadelphia. (More info.)

1932 — American swimmer Buster Crabbe won the 400-meter freestyle gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in an Olympic-record 4 minutes, 48.4 seconds. (More info.)

1949 – Boxer Ezzard Charles scored a technical knockout of Gus Lesnevich in the eighth round of their fight at Yankee Stadium in New York to retain the heavyweight boxing title. (More info.)

1971 — Sixteen baseball researchers formed the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. The organization has since been credited with greatly advancing the statistical analysis of the sport. (More info.)

1980 — Golfer Jack Nicklaus won his 17th major tournament by capturing the PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club in New York. (More info.)

1981 — Pete Rose, then of the Philadelphia Phillies, recorded his 3,631 career hit to break the National League record held by Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals. (More info.)

1984 — Medal favorite Mary Decker of the United States became tangled with 18-year-old Zola Budd of South Africa and fell to the track in the 3,000-meter race at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Maricica Puica of Romania went on to win the gold medal. (More info.)
