‘The Kennedys’ Sequel Series Being Plotted by ReelzChannel
But didn't they...hmm. It's of interest to note that while nowhere near the storied history of the famous Kennedy family itself, historical miniseries 'The Kennedys' went through quite a bit of controversy in its own right just to make it to air the first time around. Dumped by The History Channel and largely eschewed by every other network, the Greg Kinnear/Katie Holmes political dramatization eventually landed on ReelzChannel to mixed reviews, but is a sequel now in the works?
Historically speaking, it doesn't matter how many Kennedys meet their tragic ends, there always seems to be a new story to tell. Such is the apparent mentality of ReelzChannel, who Deadline has revealed to be looking to craft an eight-part miniseries sequel to its controversial 2011 miniseries 'The Kennedys.' The original series had been crafted for The History Channel in 2010, before the network dropped the project citing historical dramatization, and eventually allowed ReelzChannel to purchase the rights.
The follow-up miniseries would mostly adapt J. Randy Taraborrelli’s recent book 'After Camelot,' described as “a personal history of the Kennedy Family 1968 to the present.” Given that 'The Kennedys' culminated in Robert Kennedy (Barry Pepper)'s assassination, the new story would follow the Kennedy family in the four decades after Robert's death, highlighting the the scandals, arrests, affairs and overdoses now synonymous with the family.
In spite of the controversy surrounding 'The Kennedys,' the series helped cement ReelzChannel as a major player and went on to win four Emmys, including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Movie/Miniseries for Barry Pepper.
