Indiana Town Unveils ‘A Christmas Story’ Statue to Commemorate 30-Years of the Triple-Dog-Dare

It has been 30-years since the now holiday classic movie ‘A Christmas Story’ was released in theaters. To commemorate the film, set in northwestern Indiana, a group in Hammond decided to erect a statue portraying one of its most memorable images – the triple-dog-dare flagpole scene.

To celebrate their 30th anniversary, the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority recently unveiled a bronze statue of Flick, played in the movie by actor Scott Schwartz, at a special event Wednesday night at their office.

In fact, Scott Schwartz made an appearance at CVA headquarters to help present the new statue to the residents of Hammond. “I’m pretty much speechless at this point,” said Schwartz. “It’s breath taking.”

‘A Christmas Story’, which was released in 1983 was based on the tales of Hammond native Jean Shepherd.

“The South Shore CVA wanted to do something special for our 30th anniversary, as well as the 30th anniversary of the holiday classic ‘A Christmas Story,’” said President and CEO Speros Batistatos. “In honor of Jean Shepherd and the movie, the iconic “Triple Dog Dare” scene is now immortalized on one of the Indiana Welcome Center’s flag poles.”
