I was a little bummed that I didn't have time this past weekend to get all the fall decorations out of the basement and de-summer the house. With today being autumn-equinox, it's the midpoint between the longest and shortest days of the year. I did celebrate with a pumpkin spice and hazelnut coffee and a delicious breakfast staple that's only available once a year.

When I was at the grocery store yesterday, I noticed the end cap was littered with pink, brown, and blue boxes. Halloween is approaching because Franken Berry, Count Chocula, and Boo Berry cereals are on shelves. These have been a cereal aisle since the early Seventies and though since 2010 it's only been a seasonal cereal aisle staple and Fruit Brute and Yummy Mummy have been discontinued, the original monsters still can be found in September and October.

And, fun fact that I learned from Wikipedia: Frankenberry used to turn poop pink!  "A symptom sometimes referred to as "Franken Berry Stool."Mentalfloss.com even reported that, "After being hospitalized for four days with suspected rectal hemorrhaging, a boy was found to have been enjoying the cereal in the days prior. Physicians realized it was the culprit."

To add to the ghostly fun, an entirely new set of villain cereals launched this fall. Beloved Disney villains Oogie Boogie from The Nightmare Before Christmas and Ursula from The Little Mermaid each have a deliciously naughty sugar cereal. that include a Funko Pocket Pop! The Ursula and Oogie Boogie cereals are available at locations of Spencer’s and Spirit Halloween although the Oogie boxes seem to be sold out everywhere. The cereals are available online too. Apparently, Funko has been in the cereal business a while. Oogie and Ursula join others in their  FunkO's cereal portfolio including: The Golden Girls, Buddy the Elf, Beetlejuice, Lydia, and Narwhal. It seems to me that they are basically Froot Loops with some Funko-inspired character branding on the box. I'll stick with the classics. They have marshmallows and carefully tested dye.

I bought Count Chocula as a special surprise for my daughter even though I like Franken Berry the best. She turned her nose up at it - she likes Lucky Charms - so I'm stuck with a big bag of chocolate cereal that's not nearly as delicious as the strawberry counterpart. Oh well... maybe I'll make some Count Chocola Boo Bars or something.

What's your favorite cereal?
